Mission
The Wilson County Engineering Department is committed to delivering innovative, efficient, and fiscally responsible planning, design, and construction management services for all County-owned facilities and infrastructure. Guided by the Board of Commissioners’ Five Core Values—Sound Financial Management, Innovative County Workforce, Community Partnerships, Quality of Life, and Superior Education and Workforce— the Engineering Department strives to promote economic development through the strategic execution of capital projects and sustainable infrastructure solutions.
Responsibilities
The Wilson County Engineering Department is responsible for the following core functions:
Policy Development and Compliance
Develop and implement capital policies and procedures for County-owned facilities, infrastructure, and school projects, while also supporting the County Manager and Board of Commissioners in advancing strategic capital initiatives.
Capital Improvement Planning and Management
Prepare and maintain the County’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and its associated budget, while also coordinating with departments, schools, and the community college to ensure projects align with long-term service needs and fiscal priorities.
Project Design, Development, and Delivery
Oversee the planning, design, procurement, and construction of capital projects—including new construction, renovations, and facility upgrades - while also ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and the timely, budget-conscious completion of each project.
Construction Oversight and Quality Assurance
Conduct field observations and inspections to verify compliance with approved plans and quality standards, while also collaborating with consultants, architects, engineers, and contractors throughout the project delivery process.
Support to Utilities and Infrastructure Programs
Provide engineering support to departments, including Water Services, for the maintenance and expansion of infrastructure, while also assisting in the management of grants and enterprise funds for capital and utility-related improvements.
Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination
Collaborate with schools, municipalities, and other community stakeholders to support integrated capital planning, while also serving as a liaison with regulatory agencies, utility providers, and funding partners.
